For the first time, Won Soju is available in New Zealand, this Korean soju brand launched in February 2022 selling out the initial 20,000 bottles within the first week of its launch and then four million bottles in the first half year, finishing the year with six million bottles sold. Korean star Jay Park created Won Soju. While many a celebrated artist has launched a new alcohol brand, this is a first in the Korean landscape.
So, what is soju? It is the essence of Korean distilled elegance, with a complex and interesting history.
Soju is a pristine, colourless distilled beverage originating from Korea. The term is derived from the Korean words so representing the fiery intensity of distillation and ju meaning alcoholic drink. .
Traditionally crafted from rice, modern soju producers have diversified their starch sources, incorporating ingredients like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and tapioca. This evolution arose during World War II when rice distillation was prohibited. Koreans ingeniously turned to these alternative starches, even earning the nickname ‘Green Bottle Soju’. .
While the ban was lifted in the late 1990s, many of South Korea's top soju brands continue to employ these unconventional starches to create a blend of 95% ethanol, mixed with water and a dash of artificial ingredients. .
There are two main types of soju: Diluted soju (Green Bottle) made using sweet potatoes, potatoes and tapioca. Diluted soju follows a method akin to traditional distilled soju. Yet, different starches are employed to attain 95% ethanol, subsequently mixed with water and flavouring. .
Premium soju is crafted from high-quality rice, carefully selected and refined to eliminate impurities. These grains are meticulously mashed and fermented, resulting in a pure and full-bodied alcohol base. Multiple distillations ensure an elevated level of purity and alcohol content. Premium soju exudes a smoother, refined, and nuanced flavour profile. It retains the essence of its base ingredient, offering subtle notes of sweetness and a gentle, mild aroma. The taste is less harsh, making it ideal for sipping, served chilled, neat or over ice.
